The ultimate Rwanda road trip — 7 days, 4 national parks, Kigali city, and Lake Kivu, all from behind the wheel of your car rental. Here's exactly how to do it.
Rwanda Road Trip: 7-Day Itinerary with Car Rental from Kigali
Rwanda is small enough to drive across in a day but rich enough to fill a month of adventures. For travelers who want to see it all — the Big Five in Akagera, mountain gorillas in Volcanoes, chimpanzees in Nyungwe, and sunsets over Lake Kivu — a 7-day road trip with car rental from Kigali is the perfect way to experience Rwanda at its fullest.
Here's the ultimate 7-day Rwanda road trip itinerary, built around a 4x4 car rental from Kigali.
Vehicle Recommendation for This Itinerary
For this 7-day itinerary that covers all terrains — city, highway, savannah, mountain, and forest — we recommend a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 4x4 or Toyota RAV4. Both handle all of Rwanda's conditions confidently. View our full fleet for options and pricing.
Self-drive or chauffeur? We recommend a chauffeur-driven car rental for this route if it's your first time in Rwanda — your driver will double as a guide and handle all navigation. Read our chauffeur guide to decide.
Day 1: Arrive in Kigali — Airport Car Rental Pickup
Your trip begins at Kigali International Airport. Your car rental is waiting at arrivals. After a night at your Kigali hotel, start day one with the Kigali City Tour:
- Kigali Genocide Memorial — a profound and important history lesson
- Kimironko Market — colors, crafts, and local life
- Nyamirambo neighborhood — the heartbeat of old Kigali
- Inema Arts Center — Rwanda's thriving contemporary art scene
- Sunset dinner in Kigali with views of the thousand hills
Read our airport car rental pickup guide to arrange this seamlessly.
Day 2: Kigali → Akagera National Park (2.5 hrs)
Leave Kigali at 5:00 AM. Drive east through Rwanda's savannah landscape to Akagera National Park. Spend the full day with game drives, boat trip on Lake Ihema, and wildlife photography. Look for lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, and Nile crocodiles.
Stay overnight at Akagera Game Lodge or Ruzizi Tented Lodge inside the park. Full Akagera car rental guide here.
Day 3: Akagera National Park — Full Day Game Drive
A second day in Akagera lets you explore areas you missed on day two. Early morning drives (5:30–9:00 AM) are when predators are most active. Afternoon drives (3:00–6:00 PM) offer golden light photography and animal gatherings around water. This is what your 4x4 safari car rental was made for.
Day 4: Akagera → Kigali → Musanze (3 hrs total)
Morning drive from Akagera back to Kigali. Brief stop to regroup. Then head northwest to Musanze (Ruhengeri) — the gateway to Volcanoes National Park. The drive from Kigali to Musanze is through beautiful countryside, passing through Rulindo and Gakenke. Arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon.
Day 5: Gorilla Trekking — Volcanoes National Park
Today is the day. Leave your lodge by 6:30 AM for the park briefing at 7:00 AM. After permit allocation, you'll be assigned a gorilla family and a trekking group. The trek can last 2-8 hours depending on where the gorillas are. Once you find them, you have one magical hour with one of humanity's closest relatives.
Return to Musanze for rest. Full gorilla trekking car rental guide here.
Day 6: Musanze → Nyungwe National Park (4 hrs)
An early drive south through Rwanda's stunning interior. Stop at the Congo Nile Trail viewpoint above Lake Kivu. Arrive at Nyungwe for afternoon activities:
- Chimpanzee trekking
- Canopy walkway — suspended 70 meters above the forest floor
- Bird watching (Nyungwe has 300+ bird species)
Stay overnight near the park. Your 4x4 is essential for the forest roads here.
Day 7: Nyungwe → Lake Kivu → Kigali (4-5 hrs)
Morning at Nyungwe, then drive to Gisenyi or Kibuye on the shores of Lake Kivu. Lunch with views of the DRC across the lake. Then the drive back to Kigali — arguably the most scenic road in Rwanda, winding through tea estates and hill-top villages.
Drop off your rental car at Kigali International Airport or your hotel for your departure.
