Two of Rwanda's greatest natural wonders — Nyungwe Forest and Volcanoes National Park — require very different car hire strategies. Here's how to choose the right vehicle for each, and why it matters.
Rwanda's Two Crown Jewels — and Why Your Vehicle Choice Matters
Rwanda has two iconic primate safari parks — Nyungwe Forest National Park and Volcanoes National Park. They are radically different environments requiring different vehicles and planning.
Volcanoes National Park
Location: Northwest Rwanda. Gateway: Musanze, 110 km / 2.5 hours from Kigali.
Why people go: Mountain gorilla trekking ($1,500 permit), golden monkey tracking ($100), volcano hikes.
Road challenge: The final stretch from Musanze to Kinigi (park headquarters) is a narrow, steep dirt track that turns to mud after rain. A 4x4 is strongly advised.
Best car hire: Toyota Land Cruiser Prado or V8 with driver. RAV4 4x4 acceptable in dry season only.
Nyungwe Forest National Park
Location: Southwest Rwanda. Nearest town: Huye (Butare), 210 km / 5 hours from Kigali.
Why people go: Chimpanzee trekking ($90 permit), Canopy Walkway, colobus monkeys, exceptional birding.
Road challenge: Mountain tarmac along the Albertine Rift escarpment — narrow, winding, slippery after rain. Park internal tracks require high clearance.
Best car hire: Toyota RAV4 4x4 or Land Cruiser Prado. Driver recommended for first-timers.
