Unlimited mileage sounds obvious — but not all Kigali car rental companies offer it, and the ones that cap your mileage can make a Rwanda road trip expensive. Here is what to check before you book.
Kigali Car Rental with Unlimited Mileage: What It Means and Why It Matters
Unlimited mileage is one of those features that sounds like a standard inclusion but is absolutely not universal in the kigali car rental market. For Rwanda road trips that cover 600-800km in a week, a mileage cap can silently add $50-$150 in overage charges. Here is what to check.
What Unlimited Mileage Actually Means
A kigali car rental with unlimited mileage means you pay the agreed daily rate regardless of how many kilometres you drive that day. Drive 400km on your Akagera day trip — still the same rate. Drive 600km on your Kigali-Nyungwe-Rusizi circuit — still the same rate.
What Mileage Caps Look Like
Capped mileage policies typically set a daily limit of 100-200km. For context:
- Kigali to Akagera and back: approximately 220km — exceeds a 200km cap on its own
- Kigali to Musanze and back: approximately 220km — same problem
- A full 7-day Rwanda road trip: approximately 750-900km — significantly over any reasonable daily cap across the full week
Overage Charge Rates
When a capped kigali car rental exceeds its daily limit, overage charges typically run at RWF 200-400 per km ($0.20-0.40). On a 100km overage day across multiple days of a Rwanda road trip, that adds up to $40-$80 in charges that were invisible in the original quote.
